What moving in Huntington Beach actually takes

Every kind of Huntington Beach move
What we know about moving in Huntington Beach
Event season downtown, and how we plan around it
Huntington Beach hosts some of the biggest public events in the country, and they physically close the streets a downtown move would use. Three windows matter most:
- July 4 weekend (July 3-5). The city's Independence Day celebration is the biggest of its kind west of the Mississippi. On parade day, Pacific Coast Highway closes from Goldenwest Street to Beach Boulevard and Main Street closes through downtown from early morning to roughly mid-afternoon, with festival crowds at Pier Plaza all weekend.
- US Open of Surfing (July 25 to August 2, 2026). The world's largest surf competition runs for nine days at the pier and fills downtown and the beach lots for the whole stretch.
- Pacific Airshow (October 2-4, 2026). The largest airshow in the country by attendance, centered on the beach along Pacific Coast Highway between Twin Dolphin and Beach Boulevard.
We check the event calendar before we book your downtown move. If your building is inside a closure zone, we move you the day before or after, start early enough to be loaded before streets shut, or route the truck around the closure. It costs nothing to plan this right, and it saves your whole day. Everywhere else in the city, these events mostly just mean heavier traffic near the coast.
Huntington Harbour: islands, gates, and docks
Huntington Harbour, in the city's northwest corner, is a 1960s man-made marina community of five islands, Admiralty, Davenport, Gilbert, Humboldt, and Trinidad, plus a mainland section, all connected by bridges over the channels. Many homes front the water with private docks that hold serious boats, and several enclaves control access.
We clear the gate and plan the bridge route before move day. Coral Cay and Harbour Coves are guard-gated, Seabridge has a 24-hour guard gate, and Broadmoor is gated too. We register the crew and truck in advance, plan where the truck sits on the island streets, and coordinate timing so your team rolls through instead of waiting at the entrance.
- Dock and boat gear is part of the move. Harbour homes come with dock boxes, paddleboards, kayaks, and marine gear. We pack and move it properly, and we protect against the salt air that comes with waterfront living.
- Island streets are quiet and residential. We position the truck considerately and keep the carry organized; these are tight-knit streets where a badly parked truck is the talk of the block.
- There are 55+ communities here too. Huntington Harbour Village is a 55+ community in the Harbour area, and we handle senior moves with the extra patience and care they deserve. See our senior movers page.
Timing your move, and the four-district surprise
Two things shape planning here. The first is timing: summer beach traffic on Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard is real, and the event windows above close streets downtown. The second catches families off guard.
Huntington Beach has four school districts, not one. Four separate K-8 districts, Huntington Beach City, Ocean View, Fountain Valley, and Westminster, divide the city between them, and all of them feed into Huntington Beach Union High School District for grades 9-12. Two houses a street apart can sit in different K-8 districts. We cannot pick your school, but we can tell you this: check which district your new address is in before you commit, not after. It is one of the most common surprises for families moving within the city.
- Best move windows: weekday mornings, midweek (Monday through Thursday is our discounted weekday rate) · spring and fall, outside peak beach season · booked 3 to 4 weeks out for the date you want.
- Windows to avoid: July 4 weekend and the US Open stretch for downtown addresses · summer weekends on PCH and Beach Boulevard · month-end, when dates fill first.
Hard moving stats for Huntington Beach
The numbers we plan around for a typical Huntington Beach job. These are honest ranges; your exact crew and time come from a free quote, and heavy or high-value items are sized after we see photos and access.
- Most common job: 6 to 9 hours - a 2-3 bedroom tract home or beach-block home, usually a 3-person crew, with extra time for a packed garage or tight downtown parking.
- Most complex job: 10 to 16 hours, sometimes split over two days - a Harbour waterfront home with dock gear, a gate, and a bridge route, or a large estate move.
- Peak booking lead time: 3 to 4 weeks - book earlier for summer, and earlier still for downtown addresses near the event windows.
- Top specialty load: surfboards and boat or dock gear - the recurring careful-handling items in Surf City.
The Huntington Beach specialty load. This is Surf City USA, so boards come up constantly, and the Harbour adds boat and dock gear on top. We pad and box surfboards so fins and rails are protected, whether it is one board or a full quiver, we pack marine and beach gear properly, and we protect electronics and furniture against salt air near the water. For fragile or valuable pieces we ask for a few photos first. Heavy or awkward items (safes, pianos, spas, large stone or glass pieces) are sized with a safe crew rather than the cheapest one; items that may run over 250 pounds are priced for extra weight, and very heavy or risky-access pieces get Fleet Manager sign-off before the day.
Long-distance corridors out of Huntington Beach. When residents leave the area, one of the most common lanes is San Francisco and the Bay Area, along with other Western cities. Long moves start with a quick video estimate so we bring the right materials and give an honest price before we pack a thing.

What does a move in Huntington Beach cost?
Local moves are billed by the hour at one all-inclusive rate based on your crew size. There is no separate fee for wrapping, basic tools, or taking furniture apart and putting it back together. You will know the rate before you book.
- Condo or small home: usually a 2-person crew, several hours.
- 2-3 bedroom tract or beach-block home: usually a 3-person crew, most of a day, with extra time for a packed garage or tight parking.
- Harbour waterfront home or large estate: a larger crew, often packing the day before, plus time for the gate and the dock gear.
- Billing: a 3-hour minimum, then we bill in 15-minute steps.
A few honest notes on pricing. Monday through Thursday is our discounted weekday rate, so if your dates are flexible, midweek saves you money. California requires us to charge Double Drive Time: if the drive between your two homes is over 15 minutes, that drive time is counted twice, and we always tell you before you book. Depending on the job, a trip fee may apply, and if it does it shows on your quote. The clock only starts after you sign, so you are never charged for the drive to your first stop.

Can you move me downtown during the July 4 parade, the US Open of Surfing, or the Pacific Airshow?
Yes, with planning. On parade day, Pacific Coast Highway closes from Goldenwest to Beach Boulevard and Main Street closes through downtown from early morning to roughly mid-afternoon, the US Open fills the pier area for nine days in late July, and the Pacific Airshow takes over the beachfront in early October. If your address is inside a closure zone, we move you the day before or after, start early enough to be loaded before streets shut, or route around it. We check the event calendar before we book any downtown move.
-
Do you move on and off the Huntington Harbour islands?
Yes. The Harbour’s five islands are reached by bridges, and enclaves like Coral Cay, Harbour Coves, Seabridge, and Broadmoor control access with gates. We register the crew and truck in advance, plan the truck position on the island streets, and handle the dock boxes, boards, kayaks, and marine gear that come with waterfront homes, with proper protection against the salt air.
-
Which school district will my new Huntington Beach address be in?
It depends on the exact address, because four separate K-8 districts serve the city: Huntington Beach City, Ocean View, Fountain Valley, and Westminster, all feeding Huntington Beach Union High School District for grades 9-12. Two nearby addresses can sit in different K-8 districts, so check your new address with the district before you commit if schools matter to your move. We are happy to plan a move date around your school calendar.
-
Do you handle surfboards, boat gear, and other coastal items?
Yes, and in Surf City it comes up constantly. We pad and box surfboards so fins and rails are protected, whether it is one board or a full quiver, we pack dock and marine gear properly, and we protect electronics and furniture against salt and moisture near the water. For anything especially valuable or unusual, send a few photos and we bring the right crew and supplies.
-
