What moving in Del Mar actually takes

Every kind of Del Mar move
Local Moving Intelligence
The fairgrounds calendar, and why your move date matters
The Del Mar Fairgrounds sit at the north end of town between Via de la Valle and Jimmy Durante Boulevard, right off the I-5 interchange, and have hosted the San Diego County Fair since 1936. The fair runs mid-June into early July, summer racing runs mid-July through Labor Day on Thursdays through Sundays, and a shorter fall meet returns in November. On those days the interchange, Via de la Valle, Jimmy Durante, and Camino del Mar all back up, and on racing's opening day the city pulls curb parking on Camino del Mar at Del Mar Plaza and on 15th Street for rideshare zones.
We time and route the move around the event, not into it. We check the calendar for your date, start earlier in the morning, and come in from the south on Del Mar Heights Road or Carmel Valley Road instead of the Via de la Valle exit when the fairgrounds are busy. For a village address in racing season, we confirm the truck spot the day before, because the curb you were counting on may be signed off that morning.
- Fair season (mid-June to early July): the fair is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so those are the easy days near the fairgrounds.
- Summer racing (mid-July through Labor Day): Thursday through Sunday are race days. A Monday through Wednesday move avoids the crowd and lands on our discounted weekday rate.
- Fall meet (November): shorter, mostly Thursday through Sunday, right on top of Thanksgiving-week demand, so book early.
Village streets, the bluff, and where the truck can actually sit
The City of Del Mar is under two square miles, and the part most people picture, the village and beach streets west of Camino del Mar, is small and steep. Camino del Mar is the only arterial running north to south through town, the side streets and sidewalks climb hard in both directions, and along the south beach the rail line runs the top of the bluff about 40 feet above the sand for 1.7 miles with no legal beach access on that stretch. A full-size truck does not improvise here.
We confirm the truck position before move day and follow the city's parking rules. Stratford Court and Ocean Avenue west of Camino del Mar have free, untimed parking, but Stratford is cleared for street sweeping Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m. and Ocean Avenue on the first Monday of the month, and nothing on a city street or lot may sit more than 72 hours. Beach loading zones are at the west end of 26th Street, at 18th Street, and on Coast Boulevard by Powerhouse Park, which is where a beach-level carry usually stages.
- Summer beach days fill the village by noon, so a village move starts early and we hold the curb with cones from the first minute.
- Steep lots mean stairs and switchbacks between the street and the door. We size the crew for the carry, not just the home's square footage.
- Work in the public right-of-way needs a city encroachment permit with a traffic control plan, so if your move needs a dumpster or a container on the street, we flag that early rather than on the day.
- The bluff stabilization work along the rail line has run in phases for years; it does not stop a move, but we check staging areas near Coast Boulevard before we plan a beach-level job.
"Del Mar" that is not in Del Mar, and the school calendar
A lot of Del Mar moves never cross the city line. Del Mar Heights, the hilly neighborhood between the city and I-5, is City of San Diego with Del Mar 92014 addresses. East of the freeway, Carmel Valley and Torrey Hills (92130) are San Diego too, including One Paseo at Del Mar Heights Road and El Camino Real with its 608 apartments. All of it shares the Del Mar Union School District, nine K-6 schools including Del Mar Heights, Del Mar Hills, Ocean Air, Sage Canyon, and Torrey Hills, feeding Torrey Pines High or Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito district.
We plan the job for the address you actually have, not the name on it. A village cottage is a truck-position and stairs problem; a Carmel Valley HOA home is a gate, long-driveway, and elevator-reservation problem. We ask which side of I-5 you are on, clear the HOA or building rules in advance, and because so many of these moves run between the coast and Carmel Valley, we tell you up front whether the drive between addresses crosses the 15-minute Double Drive Time line.
- Families move for the schools, so late summer before the Del Mar Union and San Dieguito calendars start is the busiest window; book 3 to 4 weeks out for an August date.
- One Paseo and the newer Carmel Valley buildings need an elevator and loading-dock window, and we handle the certificate of insurance when the building asks for one.
- Torrey Pines High sits on Del Mar Heights Road, so school pickup and the fair shuttle lot both load that road, and we schedule the truck around it.
Hard moving stats for Del Mar
The numbers we plan around for a typical Del Mar job. These are honest ranges; your exact crew and time come from a free quote, and heavy or high-value items are sized after we see photos and access.
- Most common job: 6 to 9 hours - a 2-3 bedroom home, usually a 3-person crew, with extra time for village stairs or a Del Mar Heights driveway carry.
- Most complex job: 10 to 16 hours, sometimes split over two days - a bluff-top or beach-level home with a long carry from a loading zone, or a large Carmel Valley estate with gate and HOA rules.
- Peak booking lead time: 3 to 4 weeks - book earlier for summer, when fair season, racing season, and school-calendar moves all land at once.
- Top specialty load: fine art and high-value coastal pieces - the recurring careful-handling item in a town with an antiques and art show three times a year.
The Del Mar specialty load. Del Mar homes tend to carry fine art, antiques, and designer furniture, plus the coastal electronics and finishes that need salt-air protection, and a good share of surf and beach gear. We crate or pad art and mirrors properly, wrap sensitive pieces, and for fragile or valuable items we ask for a few photos first. Heavy or awkward items (safes, pianos, large stone or glass pieces) are sized with a safe crew rather than the cheapest one; items that may run over 250 pounds are priced for extra weight, and very heavy or risky-access pieces get Fleet Manager sign-off before the day.
Long-distance corridors out of Del Mar. When residents leave the area, common long-distance lanes include Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Northern California. Long moves start with a quick video estimate so we bring the right materials and give an honest price before we pack a thing.

What does a move in Del Mar cost?
Show these as a simple list (they set expectations; we confirm the real number in your quote):
- Condo or small home: usually a 2-person crew, several hours.
- 2-3 bedroom village or Del Mar Heights home: usually a 3-person crew, most of a day, with extra time for stairs and parking.
- Bluff-top, beach-level, or Carmel Valley estate: a larger crew, often a long carry from a loading zone and packing the day before.
- Billing: a 3-hour minimum, then we bill in 15-minute steps.
A few honest notes on pricing. Monday through Thursday is our discounted weekday rate, so if your dates are flexible, midweek saves you money. California requires us to charge Double Drive Time: if the drive between your two homes is over 15 minutes, that drive time is counted twice, and we always tell you before you book. Because so many Del Mar moves run between the coast and Carmel Valley or up to Solana Beach and Encinitas, that drive time is worth asking us about up front. Depending on the job, a trip fee may apply, and if it does it shows on your quote. The clock only starts after you sign, so you are never charged for the drive to your first stop.

Del Mar movers FAQ

-
Where can a moving truck park on Del Mar's village streets?
Camino del Mar is the only north-south arterial through town and the side streets west of it are steep and short, so we confirm the truck position for your exact address before we schedule. Stratford Court and Ocean Avenue have free, untimed parking, but Stratford is swept Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m. and nothing may sit on a city street or lot for more than 72 hours. Beach-level homes usually stage from the loading zones at 26th Street, 18th Street, or Coast Boulevard by Powerhouse Park. If anything has to sit in the public right-of-way, like a container, the city requires an encroachment permit, and we flag that early.
-
When is the best time to move in Del Mar?
Outside the fairgrounds calendar if you can. The county fair runs mid-June into early July, summer racing runs mid-July through Labor Day on Thursdays through Sundays, and a shorter fall meet returns in November, and all of them back up the I-5 interchange, Via de la Valle, Jimmy Durante Boulevard, and Camino del Mar. Monday through Wednesday during racing season, spring and fall, and mid-month dates are the easiest, and Monday through Thursday is our discounted weekday rate. Late summer is also when families move for the Del Mar Union and San Dieguito school calendars, so book 3 to 4 weeks out for an August date.
-
How much does a move in Del Mar cost?
It depends on the home, the crew, and the access, so we give you an exact quote rather than a guess. The mechanics are simple: a 3-hour minimum, then 15-minute steps, with a discounted weekday rate Monday through Thursday. California requires Double Drive Time, so if the drive between your two homes runs over 15 minutes that drive time is counted twice, and we tell you before you book; a village-to-Carmel Valley move can land close to that line. A trip fee may apply and shows on your quote, and the clock starts only after you sign. See our Moving Cost page for full tables.
-
Can you move a piano, safe, or large art piece from a bluff-top or beach-level home?
Yes, and we plan it from photos first. Send us pictures of the item and the access, including every staircase, the driveway grade, and the street or loading zone the truck will use. We size the crew for a safe carry rather than the cheapest one. Items that may run over 250 pounds are priced for extra weight, and very heavy or risky-access pieces get Fleet Manager sign-off before the day. Fine art and mirrors get crated or carton-packed, never just blanketed.
-
Do you move condos and apartments in Del Mar and Carmel Valley?
Yes. Village condos usually come down to shared entries and limited parking, so we confirm the truck spot and protect the common areas. The newer buildings east of I-5, including One Paseo at Del Mar Heights Road and El Camino Real, need an elevator and loading-dock reservation and often a certificate of insurance, and we handle both before move day so the crew is not waiting in the lobby.
-
Do you handle long-distance moves out of Del Mar?
Yes. Long moves start with a quick video estimate so we see what you have, bring the right materials, and give you an honest price before we pack a thing. The most common lanes out of Del Mar are Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Northern California, and we also run to Portland, Dallas, Austin, and Salt Lake City.
